STATEMENT
My work focuses on accentuating the tactile element of the subject matter in hand, whether it is inspired by nature, the line and form of a person or the microscopic scrutiny of a singular cell. I love an unexpected texture, touch that heightens the senses and makes you appreciate something on another level. I don’t only want to see a ‘tree’ I want the experience of being able to run my hands over the roughness of the bark, explore knot holes with my fingers or the soft compelling feel of a new leaf. So I try and imbue each piece with just such a quality in the hope of sharing it with others.
A favourite saying of mine is that ‘the land beneath me and within me go a long way in explaining what I do’, and this never changes. It is a subject my work continually revisits, perhaps ingrained by a grandfather with the same love and respect for a land and culture that has mutually shaped one another.
It is this deep rich yet complex bond we have with life that informs my work, not only the visual or textural but the spiritual as well.
